I finally joined this group! My daughters and myself get on this website to look for our questions that we need asked. They vary from minor, simple questions to quite serious questions. So we've been stalking for nearly three years now. I am Carey, from a small Indiana farm town, to now living in southern Georgia. We love the south! Warm, blue skies in February. Different from the day my family up north is having. Brrr. Me and hubby have 8 kids together, but only my five daughters are into chickens. My girls range from 4-25. Big age range, huh? Our last daughter was an over the hill baby! I'm a granny too! My hobbies are gardening, crafting, writing, and of course chicken raising....but my absolute favorite hobby is chicken coop building. For Valentines Day I got roses, a new drill and a container of screws. Ohhh lala! I'm 45 and getting my science degree also. I love genetics and micro biology. 7 kids are still at home, so I'm also a maid and cook. I have to have a sense of humor, or I'd lose my mind. Life can be nuts sometimes and chicken raising is what helps calm me and keep me sane.
How many chickens do we have?? Oh my. What number do I tell my husband, or the truth? Haha. I DO share my chickens with my daughter in law. She is 26 and new to the chicken game. So really I shouldn't count the chickens I'm raising to give to her. We have an Ameraucana, a Welsummer, an Easter Egger, A buff Brahma, An Australorp, A Polish/Ameraucana mix, a Starlight egger, and two girls I hatched out that are a mix of Leghorn and Easter Egger. They are due to lay soon. I just received a package of chicks last week that I'm splitting with DIL, that are Lavender Orpingtons, Salmon Faverolles, and Black Copper Marans. And yesterday I ordered a package of 10 silkies for daughter, Matilda. She is going to freak out when she sees them. So now I have three more coops I need to make. My husband puts up fences, so I get his leftover pickets and 2x4's. I try to use the leftover wood, and rarely come out of pocket. They free range through the day, but go up at night, of course. I'm wondering about those automatic doors I see on youtube. I'd love to have those! My goal is to have a beautiful basket full of colors. These baby marans hopefully give me a pretty dark egg this summer. My welsummer hasnt laid yet either. I'll be excited to see her eggs.
So thanks for letting us join! Matilda is 12 and will probably be on here more than me. She is constantly checking your website for answers.
