(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My parents had a flock of chickens on our horse farm when I was in middle and high school, but I didn't interact with our 'farm' animals all that much. My husband also grew up with backyard chickens, but was much more involved. We now have a flock of our own that we have had for over a year now.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We have 5 hens, although we did have 6 at one point. She passed away in the middle of the night-- we think it was liver failure :(

(3) What breeds do you have?

We have Pepper the barred rock, Sunny the buff orpington, Sweet Pea the cinnamon queen, Penny the easter egger, Marie Antoinette (I call her Marie, my husband calls her Ant) the french black copper maran, and the late Filianore (Fil for short) was a speckled sussex. We also had a really friendly olive egger named Poppy that ended up being a roo. Luckily, we were able to rehome him to a good place.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I love watching them do their thing and seeing their personalities interact with each other like a little sorority. I also love holding them in my lap and petting them. I think they are all so beautiful and unique and I love learning about other breeds and what they look like. Also, just watching them run top-speed across the yard is hilarious.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Some other hobbies I have are playing video games, painting, and golfing. I also enjoy cleaning and cooking on the days I feel particularly energized.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I live in northeast Texas with my (new!) husband, chickens, and puppydog. Our dog, Tarkus, will be 2 in November and he is the most perfect little creature that ever existed. He is a total mutt but looks like a mini Irish wolfhound with a curly tail. He is so good with our hens, too. I work at the university in our town as a communications coordinator, and I am also a PhD student in linguistics. My husband is a computer scientist and works for a defence agency.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I found BYC through Google after desperately trying to find answers for a problem I'm having and will post about after this. Even after my question is (hopefully) answered, I figured being in this community would be good for me. I live in a super rural town and I know others have chickens, but none in our neighborhood and I don't get out to meet people much. Having a group I can talk chickens with sounds really nice.

:welcome

Hi, loved your intro...would you be willing to share a picture of Tarkus? He sounds awesome!
Always happy to share my boy! Here he is on his first birthday getting some pumpkin treats. It was also before a much-needed haircut! I'm also going to plug his insta account lolol! @black_iron_tarkus

Welcome. I love the names you choose. What makes you think she passed away from liver failure?
Thanks! And it was a total guess. She had a lot of treats the day before and we think she had some sort of fatty liver disease that is apparently common in heavier breeds like hers. When we found her the next day, she was still in the coop without any wounds and none of the shavings wer disturbed. Hopefully whatever it was was quick and in her sleep :(
