Hello y’all!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I wouldn’t consider myself necessarily new to chickens, but I would definitely consider myself a novice. I was introduced to the world of chickens (approx. 3-4 years ago) by my husband who has unfortunately since then created a tractor supply “chick days” and hatchery prowling monster. As you can probably tell by my SN I am head over heels for my babies as naive as I may be about them. And when I mean naive I truly do mean it for I was married and promptly swept out of the city to be nestled in the deep hills and hollers of Kentucky with little to no fine country living knowledge.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
As of RIGHT NOW I am mommy to 14 rambunctious chicks. But that number is constantly being made a plea for to increase.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Let’s see! 5 black sex links, 4 Rhode Island reds, and 5 bantams (4 of which I believe to be silkies and 1 that I am not quite sure of).

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Oh goodness, that’s a doozy of a question. What isn’t there to love about raising chickens? Well, a lot actually. But the good completely outweighs the bad. The first time I had chickens it was primarily for the eggs as the country was going through a massive egg shortage. However, as of now it’s more for my own enjoyment and my husband’s peace of mind from my incessant pleas for more chickens.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Besides being a lucky housewife, I am a mother to a toddler. If I’m not with my family I am usually outside training/hunting my beagles or fawning over my fluffy tote brooder babies. On the rare occasion I do have extra spare time I love to read, write, and play video games.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Oops, I think I may have answered all of that in question 5. Oh well, I guess I saved you some time!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I found BYC while browsing the internet in search of some information on my Silkie babies last weekend. I wasn’t quite sure what breed they were until I happened upon this website and I just knew I had to join it right then, not only for all the important information and helpful tidbits but also for the supportive and caring community it so obviously provides! I am so very happy to finally be here!

It sounds like you area adapting well to the Country life!

A toddler and 14 rambunctious chicks.. that's a recipe for burnout!!! :)

Welcome! Are the Beagles good with the chicks? I would think so.

Tell me about it! If the one isn’t making a mess, the other 14 surely are. :p

But thank you for the welcome! As for the beagles I can honestly say they are the most loving breed of dog I’ve had. Besides the smell, they don’t seem too interested in the chicks at all. I doubt they’d hurt a fly! ...well, except for a rabbit, but of course that is their job. ;)

View attachment 1724512 Have you owned chickens for the last 3-4 years too? Or is this your first batch? Fourteen babies sounds like a fun mess to deal with. We'd all love to see some pics!
Congrats on your new flock! View attachment 1724511

Oh goodness, I forgot to clarify that part! No, I actually haven’t had chickens again until I got this group of 14 chicks. Crazy! I know! I’ve only had this bunch for about 2 weeks. But I gave up my previous group when I was pregnant with my toddler due to thinking I wouldn’t be able to tend to them like I had been previously able to. At that time I had 15 red sex links, but luckily they didn’t go too far. They were just right next door in my sister-in-law’s coop so I could still enjoy seeing them. :D
