Hi my name is Michele! I have not yet gotten my chickens but hoping to this Spring! I am just trying to learn now so I will be ready! I grew up around chickens, pigs, horses and such. My brother currently has 40 chickens, 5 ducks and just hatched 3 new baby chicks! I am so excited and so is the rest of the family! I have been married 26 years with 3 kids 25, 20 and 9! 2 boys and 1 girl lol we have also taken in my sons friend cause he doesn't have a great family but he does now! So I actually have 2 20 year olds lol We have the wire to do the pen working on getting good plans for the coop! Any suggestions are appreciated. Got to figure out how to keep my two dogs out cause they might try to get them! lol Any suggestions on that would be appreciated too! I am so excited! We are also going to container garden this coming spring too! Years ago we tried to grow corn and it grew but only about 3 feet tall and it tasseled but never produced. We've heard that our sand lol needs lyme. So that is why we are going the container way. Looking forward to gaining knowledge and getting my chickens! Thanks for letting me join!

Welcome to the BYC flock! We are glad you joined us!

Good for you for wanting to be fully educated before getting your birds! Be sure to use the BYC search bar to search all those topics you are looking to learn more about and don't forget to visit the "Learning Center" as well. They have lots of great topics! There are also some great gardening threads on here if you want to learn more about container gardens, corn, lyme, etc.

Yes, please work out a way to keep dogs and chickens apart. Dogs + chickens = dead chickens. You never hear of a chicken killing a dog, so they are the ones that need to be protected.

Welcome to Backyard chickens.

Hi Michele, welcome to BYC!

Good for you on doing your homework now, before you get the chickens, lol. The Learning Center is great, there are a lot of helpful articles there and of course, always feel free to ask questions. With 4 kids around, you'll have plenty of free labor around to give you a hand, chickens are a great hobby for everyone in the family.

Thanks for joining us, it's nice to have you here!

Thanks for the welcome! I take all my animals seriously! lol I like to know what I'm getting into! My kids are excited well some of them lol my 9 year old goes and collects eggs every time we are at my brothers! She loves it! And yes I know that my dogs and chickens equals dead chickens and I don't want that! I wish my doggies would stand guard! And I am saying they wouldn't be good with them cause they drug up a chicken one time from a neighbors yard now I don't know if they killed it or not I can't say and they didn't eat him just drug it onto my land! I love my doggies though and they can't go! Thanks for all the info I have already looked through some but got lot's more learning to do! Thinking of going with the Golden Comets! Thanks again!

If you're looking for some excellent egg layers, you can't go wrong with the Golden Comets. That's another name for the Red Sex Link birds and they are egg machines! We have 3 in our mixed flock and not only do they give us huge brown eggs, they are curious, funny, entertaining girls. One of them is my lap chicken, and she is a sweetheart.

Have fun and let us know how you are getting along.
