Hello Everyone! I am a new member who has become intrigued by the idea of keeping chickens. I attended a workshop at the Mother Earth News fair in Wisconsin and think I would like to move ahead and get some! Although I am going to wait until spring.

Can anyone give me guidance on the best type of coop to build? One that would have insulation, since winters here can be very cold!

ya I have been doing reaserch on chickens for the past week have like 15 - 20 hours into it and every thing I read makes it seem like more work. What gets me is how you have to give them shoots your self!
 
Welcome to BYC. Click on the "Raising Backyard Chickens" and go to the 'coop and run design,etc' section. Also type Wisconsin in the search bar at the top of the page, locate your state thread and repeat your question about housing there. Good luck in constructing your coop and starting your flock.

Good for you on wanting to get the coop ready before you get the chickens...a lot of times it seems to happen the other way around, lol. Just make sure you make it large enough for the number of birds you'll be getting. Chickens hate to be crowded.

I don't know much about building coops but I do know that it can never be big enough because chickens are very addicting

Just keep in mind that insulation is not necessary. Chickens are much hardier than you think and the key to their health (and preventing frostbite) in winter is actually ventilation, so be sure to read up on that as well. Just type "ventilation" into the BYC search bar and you will find a lot of information that comes up.

Chickens tolerate cold much better than heat, they are walking around in their "down" jackets. You can also post on your state thread and find out how others in your area prepare for winter. Put "Wisconsin thread." in the search box. Welcome to Backyard chickens.
 
Hi and I hope you add some good hens to your family.. Research winter hardy breeds and stick to those. Chickens aren't really that scary or hard to take care of... Make sure they are protected by preditors... That's dependent on your area and circumstance... High ventilation and plenty of stoops for them to rest at night. There are many different ways to do this and you kind of have to pick and choose what's best for you. I made my coop from scrap material and it works great for our situation and area!!! Good luck.
