(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Yes, I am new to chickens. I just got my hens from a neighbour who is leaving the country for the next 6 months. I will also be getting a rooster this week.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

5 hens, and 1 rooster on the way

(3) What breeds do you have?

They are all Rhode Island Reds, I would like to get one or two hens that give coloured eggs also

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Google search

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Gardening, canning, local historian, genealogy, travel

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I work at a local university but live about 65 kms away from Montreal in the Township of Hemmingford, on a hobby farm. Our brick house was built in 1851 and was sold off from the original 115 acre lot in 2000. We own just under 2 acres and have a perpetual lease of sorts on a few more acres. The remaining acreage is still a working farm producing the usual corn, soya and wheat crops and it surrounds our property. We have a Yorkshire/Maltese mix dog going on 11 years old.

Hi, welcome to BYC!

That was a very nice introduction, I enjoyed reading it.

I'm a Rhode Island Red fan myself, dependable layers and kind of spunky. I hope you find the colored egg layers you want to add. Have you been to the Learning Center yet? There are a lot of very good articles there on all sorts of poultry topics:

And for fun, there are hobby forums here on things like gardening and canning. Just use the Search box at the top left side to find things you are interested in.

Good luck to you with your new flock.

Thanks for joining us!
