My name is Brittany and I am getting my first 2 chicks this week (Wednesday or Thursday). I'm pretty excited because, well, chickens are AMAZING!!! I have been researching like crazy to make sure that I spoil and pamper my girls :)

We live in the suburbs, but have a little chunk of land where we can have (up to) 6 hens. We are starting with 2 to acclimate our dog to the idea of having chickens before we subject all 6 to his curious torture :) I am starting with 2 Crested Cream Legbars- pretty exciting stuff!

Glad you joined us! Have you looked through the Learning Center articles yet? There is a lot of great information on chicken keeping there:

And for the dog and chicks, that is a topic that comes up here often and some of our members have shared some great tips to help make the process easier. Here are some threads:

glad you have joined us and congrats on getting your own

Good luck with the new adventure. If you are getting the chicks locally, IMO go ahead and get all 6 at one time, it is a lot easier to raise them together and avoid the issues of adding to the flock at a later time. And they are happier with at least 3 in the flock.

And do be very careful with introduction to your dog, there are too many sad experiences with the challenge.

Congrats on the soon to be new little ones!! I am so egg-cited for you!!

Others have left you lots of great links to follow and learn more about how to care for your babies. Are they coming in the mail? If so, make sure to be there at the Post Office or have them call you when they arrive. When you get them home, be SURE to dip each beak in the water and set them down right in front of the water. Babies can get severely dehydrated and NEED to drink before eating to avoid pasty butt, which can kill them. It is best to withhold food for 15 mins or so until they have drank enough water and have settled down from their long trip.

Enjoy your little ones and we do welcome you to our flock! :)

Glad you joined us Brittany! Tell us all about it, chicken keeping is far above exciting! Believe me, you'll LOVE it! I started keeping chickens in 2013- a friend gave us 6 hens and now I have 27 chickens! 10 1 year old hens, 2 older hens, 1 banty rooster, and 14 young pullets that are about to start laying! I still want more though . . .
