I started out with two and now have five. Our zoning only allows for six chickens [no roosters] and I have had six in the past.

At the risk of becoming a chicken math enabler, I did just want to mention the risk with having just two.

Sadly we lose chickens along the way. If you only have two and lose one, the remaining chicken will be very lonely and possibly even fret.

On two occasions, when I only had two, I lost one, leaving the other one on her own and fretting for company, necessitating a mad panic to find her a friend and introducing them without the recommended quarantine etc.

If you have room, three is probably a good idea so that if you do lose one, you will not have a lonely hen and you will have more time to find a replacement, quarantine, gradual introduction etc.
