Hi Zack! I agree with @drumstick diva, you need to feed your young chickens, chick starter. Or, you can feed Purina Flock Raiser, it has 20% protein. Use the cracked corn/scratch as a treat only due to the poor nutritional value. The girls don't need the oyster shell until they start laying eggs. Chicken grit is good to have in a separate dish if the chickens don't have excess to dirt/grit naturally.

There is so much you can learn here on BYC & from all the wonderful members. Keep your Dad's flock healthy & happy!

When you bought your chickens the feed store didn't give you proper advice on feeding them. Scratch & corn is not a nutritious food for chickens. They should be on grower feed with a separate container of crushed oyster shell for any hens requiring it. Roosters won't touch it.

You may have some golden comets, you mentioned some called"goldens."

i posted pics in my other post and i bought them from a farmer well my brother bought them for me.

My chickens are so much happier since i started letting them out of their coop the rooster didnt like it at first and tried his best to get back in now they still stay around their coop but they can walk around if they wish to i leave the coop open when i let them out and close it at night when i put them up

Hi Zack, I'm glad to hear the chickens are feeling better. Sounds like you've improved their quality of life. As for the feed you bought, It's a good feed if your pullets are over 18 weeks old or laying eggs. If they are younger than that, it has too much calcium. I also wouldn't feed layer pellets to roosters. I prefer "Flock Raiser" for all the birds & just have Oyster shell in a separate feeder always available for the girls. That will provide the calcium they need to form egg shells when they start laying. They will eat only what their body needs.
Hope your Dad is doing well. I know the heat can be hard on those with COPD. I bet he's proud that you keep striving to become the best keeper of his chickens that you can be.

Yes the hens are supposed to be laying eggs around late this month - sometime next month so they are well over 18 weeks i'm pretty sure and i checked tractor supply that's the best place i could find around here and could not find flock raiser that's why i got the crumbles its says on the bag it has lots of nutrients and stuff for them i do have oyster shells just have not put them out for them yet

My name is obviously Zack i have 14 chickens and a rooster. Most are Rode Island Reds with a few of them being Golden something i forget whats its called lol. I was told they wouldn't start laying until August though so i am still waiting for that one. They are my dads chickens he has Stage 4 COPD so i take care of him and them.
