Hi, just wanted to quickly introduce myself.
I live in Canada, moved from the city (Montréal) to the country almost 5 years ago. I live with my husband and our two kids (11 & 14) and we have wanted to get chickens since we moved! We bought a really old farmhouse so there have been many projects to tend to and we are only now finally building a coop! It's almost ready, just in time for our chicks - first hatch was earlier this morning
I was given 24 eggs from a friendly local farmer - she said the rooster is an Americauna and the hens are a variety of 'mutt' (does that exist in the chicken world?) - eggs I got vary between all shades of white, brown, and blue - so I'm not sure what I'll end up with. She assured me that all her chickens are good layers and are of the variety that can withstand our harsh winters, and for now that's all I care about. I'm hoping to get anywhere between 8-12 hens, and she said she'd take back any roosters we end up with.
I posted my first question over in the incubation & hatching forum. I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions to come. I have found this website/forum SO incredibly helpful in the last few weeks as I've been planning and preparing for their arrival. I will try to search the forums thoroughly for answers before posting any potentially redundant questions
Looking forward to sharing and learning together!
