Hello from Arizona. My kids joined 4-H and the small stock project this year. We got our first chicks 4 weeks ago with the intention to show both in breed and showmanship. Two Svarn Hona, two Bantam Cochin, one Russian Orloff, one Maline and two Easter Eggers.

Unfortunately, we’ve lost two chicks, one Bantam Cochin and one Svarn Hona. After the Bantam died, she had a respiratory infection I think, I started Antibiotic shots with three others (all quarantined) and all seemed fine until we discovered one of the Svarn Hona had passed last night. I’m not sure why, I didn’t see any obvious signs of sickness.

I’m a little rattled by this second death because I don’t think we were doing anything wrong, but who knows?

So anyway, that’s my story. We’re really liking chickens and I haven’t seen my kids this happy and engaged in a long time, I just din’t Want to lose the whole flock.

Hello elo32. Welcome to BYC! There is tons of info here and very good people to help you on your journey as new chicken owners. :)

If you want to get the most out of BYC, I suggest you do the following:
  • For general education, spend some time browsing the Articles link above and possibly the Learning Center. You will find excellent information for both newbies and long-time chicken owners there.
  • When you have specific questions, most of the time a quick search will come up with the answers.
  • If you don't find anything useful that way, post your question in an appropriate sub-forum. People here are very helpful and will answer your question even if it has been asked 100 times before.
BYC has an entire subforum devoted to injury/disease/etc issues. When you have specific problems, you can post details and people will jump in to help.

Good luck and enjoy your time here.
