In the Brooder
Hello everyone!
I am heading into my second year of owning chickens and it has been a fun, humorous and scary ride all at the same time. I meant to join a while back because every time I go to Google and type in my question(s), this forum always pops up and seems to give me the answer. Now that I am in need of some help and guidance of my own (that I know Google probably won't be able to help much with), I decided it was time for me to join.
I live in North FL with my husband and 2 kids. We live out in the country on 10 acres. Chickens were the first animal that we added to our farm (we couldn't have them where we lived previously and it was one of the reasons we finally decided to move lol). We started out with 8 chicks, last winter. 4 isa browns and 4 barred rocks. We happened to be at Tractor Supply one day and noticed they had chicks out, for sale. So we got the 8 of them, brought them home and they have brought a smile to my face ever since.
Last summer I noticed two roosters in our yard. I knew why they were hanging around... It was because we free range our chickens so they were trying to swoon the ladies. At first, I thought they were the neighbor's chickens so I asked her and she said they used to hang out in her yard for a long time, roosted in the trees but never knew where they came from. So needless to say we adopted two roosters. I was a little hesitant at first because we only had 8 hens but it has (thankfully) worked out. One is a Rhode Island Red and the other is a Copper Maran (in my profile pic). We named them Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday and they have really become a big part of the family (almost like the farm mascots lol).
Sadly, we have lost some girls to either a stray cat or hawks (I'm thinking both) and because of this, I have some questions but figured I would introduce myself before jumping into the rest of the forum and asking.
Nice to meet you all!
