Hi I am new to the site and new to owning chickens. The city I live in recently passed a new orandince to allow backyard chickens. I plan on getting a small flock for this spring. My dad who has owned chickens before and is making a coop for me. I am excited but also nervous since reading some of the posts make it seem a little overwhelming at first. Do I get eggs and hatch them myself? Get baby chicks and raise them? Or spend the money and get pullets? What is suggested for someone just getting into owning chickens?
Any insight is appreciated! TIA!

Hi, it's nice to have you here! Try not to get overwhelmed (easier said than done I know). Just take things a step at a time and enjoy the process as you learn what works best for you.

I personally like to raise chicks, they're so cute and funny. You'll be able to watch each one's personality develop and see how fast they grow. Maybe once you have some 'chicken-wrangling' under your belt, hatching eggs would be fun.

Whichever way you get started, enjoy! And always feel free to ask questions, we're all here to help each other.

Glad you joined the BYC flock. Getting hens or pullets at point of lay, would get you eggs much sooner you would also be certain of their gender. But the older birds may not have been socialized in a farm setting., as baby chicks would if you raise them up yourself.

Hello and welcome to BYC. This chicken game isn't too difficult - I managed :D

Here’s a link to the Articles section - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/ There you’ll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping chickens - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs.

There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

Each week, various topics are discussed, which can also be a great resource - https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/topic-of-the-week-thread-archive

G’Day from down under Sphynxlover :frow Welcome!

I started with pullets and was pleased that I did; getting some experience before attempting to raise chicks.

Good luck! You might be interested in downloading this free e-book My First Year With Chickens

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
