I’m May and I’m a new chicken owner, but I’ve been browsing BYC for awhile now, soaking up as much knowledge as I could so I wouldn’t be completely in the dark when I finally brought chickens home.

For the moment I only have one chicken, a teeny tiny baby black australorp named Opal. I’m not sure what gender it is yet, but I’ve been calling it “her.” Either way it’ll still be called Opal.

The plan is to eventually grow my flock, but presently Opal is an only child. She’s already crazy spoiled.

Tee hee, Opal sounds very mischievous :p At the risk of being an echo, I agree that she would probably be happier with some friends.

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has a Learning Centre and also Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of Opal or her friends when they arrive :p [insert enabler warning here] you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Oh yeah and when she is old enough for gender opinions, if you would like some you can post here:
