Hello

what you are describing is called a chicken tractor. Should be able to find tons of info/plans on it.
Thank you for your reply, I don't know if what I am trying to describe is a chicken tractor, I may be wrong since I am new to chickens. What I meant was it would be there permanent yard run that won't be moved and it will be what they go in to when they come out of their coop. We are using wood fencing plus chicken wire on the sides and hardware cloth over the entire top. We have not yet figure out the total dimensions but hopefully it will be quite large, 20ftx20ft will be the smallest. Our property is right up against acres of woods, forest, and we have coyotes, fox, raccoons, opossums, stray cats, chicken hawks, Turkey vultures, owls, and probably other predators I don't even know about. I know we are probably over doing it but I want to make sure they are happy and protected from predators. So would this still be considered a chicken tractor? I had read that a chicken tractor is portable and you can move it to any part of your property so is that right?

You can modify a tractor to be stationary, so could still use as a model. A cautionary comment. We just had an "issue" with our hound and our chicken/bunny yard. Our yard, thankfully, is made of chicken wire overlaying hog panels. Chewy ripped up the wire but couldn't get thru the panel. Have now added a layer of 2x4 weld wire to keep the little livestock INSIDE. Only fatality was a bunny that ran out thru the hog panel.

I am so sorry about your bunny. We are still in the process of making their yard run and I am thinking of getting cattle panels or pallets to use along with either chicken wire or hardware cloth. Hardware cloth is so expensive so do you have any recommendations to go along with the panel or pallets?

That' what is am afraid of one of my dogs or other predators getting my chickens.

We looked at it this way...The hog panel keeps out the big guys. The weld wire keeps IN the little livestock. The chicken wire keeps babies and aerial dangers (hawks, owls,...) apart. I personally am wary of pallets because my dogs can rip one apart in about 5 minutes. Hence the metal.
