I am not new to chickens, we have kept chickens for about 16 years now. We only have 3 chickens at the moment which is a very low number for us. We are a large family and usually have 20-30 birds, but we experienced two tragedies last fall/winter, hawks attacked and picked off our free range birds so we penned then up and something, either a bobcat or very large raccoon tore the wood off the back of the coop and took or injured most of the rest. We didn't get more chicks this spring because we knew were facing a move.
We have a barred rock, americana and a red sex link. We also have an Emu.
I found Backyardchickens.com in a google search for emu.

So very sorry for your painful experiences with predators. BYC also has an Emu forum but they are not going to protect chickens from harm. Please post on the predator forums here, so they may advise what will work best to project your birds.

The Emu came with a goat she's quite bonded to and does well with the two goats and two alpacas. She is very much in charge. We have rebuild the chicken coop with decking screws rather than the nails it was built with. The coop came with the house and it was the first time anything like that has ever happened in the three years we have been here.
