New to the whole backyard chicken thing. The wife and I have discussed doing it for sometime but never seriously. About a month ago we were at a FFA auction and I ended up buying 3 broilers (the white ones in the picture) for $1200. I told them to process them and my wife came around the corner to take our picture with the exhibitor and said "no, we are keeping them".

So here we are with 3 broilers we know nothing about! I then bought 3 more hens from a local guy who was thinning his flock down to make room for more.

A neighbor was upgrading their coop so we ended up with an awesome coop with a nice run.

Please tell me that is a typo and that you did not pay $1200 for three broilers. Because of their genetics they are probably relegated to a relatively short life. It can be extended by limiting feed and encouraging free ranging. Welcome to BYC, and good luck with your birds.

$1200... it was for a good cause!

Welcome to BYC.
:yesss: We are glad you joined this flock!
Jump right in and make yourself at home.

Congrats on you purchase!
I am sure the kids will enjoy the donation.
Our local auction raises hundreds of thousands of dollars each year for the kids.
For those who don't know about the Houston Rodeo...check out what the top broilers went for last month.
