I've known about backyard chickens.com for a while and I've gone here when any of my girls were sick or to see if a treat was safe to give to them. I finally decided to join.
My family has had chickens most of my life, and we've had four broods. Although sickness has been a problem for a lot of our chickens, right now our flock is at 9 hens. Although we have 11 acres of land, we've never owned any other kinds of livestock. Chickens are enough work for us!
Our flock of nine is a mix of four different broods over a course of 11 years. Most of our past hens have succumb to disease, others to predation. There is only one hen representing each of the first two broods. Our oldest hen, an americana named Lila, is partially blind, has feet bloated by the remains of bumblefoot. She always comes to our doorstep when we let them outside the run to beg for food. She is one of my favorites.
The main reason I've joined this website is to have a good place to go if I have questions and a way to help other chicken enthusiasts if they are having problems. I am excited to be here!
