Are you planning to raise chicks or get started pullets? Do you have any specific breeds in mind? Do you have restrictions on how many birds you can have?

We are probably going to start with chicks. We can have up to 10 hens with no roosters. We are in the city. We haven't decided on breeds yet. I would like some girls that are docile and friendly.

I don't have any but folks here rave about how docile and friendly Orpingtons and Brahmas are.
I have a Plymouth Barred Rock hen and another one as a chick in the brooder. These girls are hands down my most friendly chickens. Any of these breeds would be well suited to your climate.
