Hello!

Welcome to BYC! Plenty of helpful people here, so read and ask plenty of questions. Your girls will be much better off for the effort.

I've run into a couple of new chicken people on the board in the last couple of days with the same problem, so I figured I'd warn you up front before you made the same mistake. If you are going to use a prefab coop, be aware that they lie about capacity. My prefab was supposed to be able to handle 8 chickens, but is slightly crowded for my 3 full sized birds. When you come up with an initial plan for your coop and run (prefab or not), post the details on BYC and ask for feedback. You will get plenty and can fix any problems before you've invested real money.

Enjoy your time here. BYC is a great resource
Yeah I'm not waisting money on a prefab. I heard they dont last long and aren't secure. I'll have to spend so much time and energy modifying a prefab to make it secure I may as well make my own.

Hello, and welcome! Glad that you joined! What breed or breeds are you thinking about getting?

I am tentatively looking into orpington, black australop, Australian white, wyandotte, blue Americana, or barnevelder. I would like to do a mixed flock so the kids can easily tell the difference in the hens and learn their personalities easier.

Double check where you get your chicks from, as many hatcheries don’t label theirs correctly and give different breeds such as Easter Eggers instead of Ameraucana.

As for raccoons, this may seem unconventional, but if you happen to already own cats, we feed the raccoons a bit.

We have outdoor cats, so we just add a bit more cat food, and the raccoons happily eat that instead of our chickens. Haven’t had a raccoon related death in 10 years since we started doing that.

We do have 2 cats actually. The raccoon recently broke into the basement where the cats are fed and was stealing their food.
