Hi, my name is Julia and I'm new to chickens. We are going out to get our first 6 this week. I'm not sure what breeds to get. We have been saying no to pets for the kids for years but chickens are a different story. We are all excited to take care of them and hopefully get plenty of eggs.

Hello, Julia, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Do you already have your coop and run set and ready to go? One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking they have plenty of time to get a coop and run built before the chicks need it only to find themselves scrambling to get the work done as the chicks grow so much faster than they realize.
Buying a pre-fabricated coop is generally NOT a good idea unless it is from an outfit like Carolina Coops or something similar but they are very expensive. The TSC kind are grossly overrated for the number of birds they can hold and are generally poorly made.
