Hello

Welcome. As far as climate...all of us agree that heat is way worse than cold. When it comes to cold, some provide heat and others don't. I provide heat when it gets into the single digits, but not before then. I like radiant heat....it is very safe
Thank you for the info. That is what I am trying to determine, at what temperature to add supplemental heat and if it's different for different breeds.

I have this for heat:
https://www.cozyproducts.com/products/cozy-coop

And this thermostat:
https://inkbird.com/products/temperature-controller-itc-308-wifi

So I can monitor the temps and set when the heating panel kicks on, but i don't want to disrupt the chickens ability to weather the season naturally. I know leghorns are on the smaller side compared to rhode island reds or orpingtons so i don't know if I set the heater on sooner.

Hiya, and welcome to BYC!! :frow

We have two of the cozy coops and that same thermostat. The thermostat runs a black ceramic bulb in our brooder.

If you can make the chickens some kind of dog house/rabbit hutch type thing to go get shelter, you can put the cozy coop in the back of it and it can never get too hot but they can cozy up to it if they get chilled.

While you can make that thermostat do the trick, I'll suggest you not bother trying to read those directions! Just play with it and you'll figure it out. We changed the variance to lower than it's set for (+1/-1) and played around with the temp setting as like 85F means 95F.

Here's another idea of what will work for a cozy coop: Thermo Cube. It measures the ambient temp and turns on (gives power) at 35F and shuts off at 45F.
