I live in France and have one hen. She is named Millicent (Millie). We were given two hens by a neighbour about 3 years ago who was moving away and couldn't take his hens with him. Mathilde, the other hen, died last May. So we now only have Millie. Our neighbour didn't really care for his hens. He had four or five originally but the others either died or were culled (we don't know). He never cleaned out their coop. We know this because he offered to give it to us, but when we saw how disgusting it was, we declined and bought a new one. Millie has been laying eggs consistently for the 3 years we have had her, but she could be over 5 yrs old now and her egg laying has declined gradually. So we no longer rely on her for eggs. I wanted to get at least one other hen after Mathilde died, to keep Millie company, but my husband put his foot down because of the mess they make. They have been kept pretty much free range, with the freedom of the entire garden. He does not want any more hens, although he is kind to Millie. So she will probably be our last hen. She is a standard brown hen, and I am very fond of her. Currently I have moved her hen hut into our cellar, because it is cold here in Northern France. She is recovering (I hope) from an infection, which is why I went onto this forum, and decided to join.

I hope your Millie recovers from her infection. How kind of you to give her and Matilda a good home! Your entire post tugged at my heartstrings -- from getting the girls out of a filthy coop, to losing your Matilda, to taking care of Millie, even though her egg-laying has decreased.

You have a good heart, and we are happy to have you join our community. Welcome to BYC!

Welcome! Glad you are here! I know your husband doesn't want more hens but does he understand that it is not good for a chicken to be the only one? Maybe if he knew that he would change his mind?
