Washingtonians Come Together! Washington Peeps

The chicks were still slinging crumbles out of the feeder so I'm trying something new. I added popsicle sticks.

Slinging food out of the feeders is what they do. We lose a lot of crumbles that way, but they do eat some off the ground too.

Adding the popsicle partitions to the feeder made all the difference in the world. No more crumbles are being tossed out now.

I put 5 eggs into the incubator that I'm pretty sure are all from my lone Rhode Island Red pullet. It's been a week or more since she's been in contact with the cockerels so they might/might not be fertile. Time will tell.

She's the only pullet that has been laying regularly since POL. The New Hampshire pullets pretty much stopped laying. They look sort of like they're going through a bit of a molt.

I've heard they stay fertile for a couple weeks.

Frosty Frosty here and 20 degrees. Gave all the chickens liquid water to drink. Today might be the day I start "rearranging" the flock.

The 6 week old chicks are looking like there are 6 pullets and 3 cockerels, a pretty good ratio. I might have a few New Hampshire pullets to sell soon.

I just candled the eggs that are on day 5 of incubation. I saw a black spot inside two of the eggs that I assume is the start of development. Three of the eggs looked like clears, but I'll candle them again in a few days to make sure.

Incubation started January 23rd, 2PM. The last time the pullets were in contact with the cockerels was January 13th so the eggs were around 4 to 10 days old post-contact. I should have written date-of-lay on all the eggs. Live and learn.
