[Hobby farm crazy]

I am new to chickens since January of this year. I have 4 Orpingtons, 3 hens and 1 rooster. I've been told it's not a good ratio, but so far he's not been overbearing.
I live in Northern California with my 4 goats, 2 barn cats, 1 indoor Maine Coon cat, and a Bernese Mountain dog...oh and a husband
I am a semi retired ceramic artist, encaustic painter, and love to wire wrap precious stones.

I am excited to learn all I can to raise happy chickens..mainly for eggs. Currently waiting for chicks to hatch by 2 broody hens

Hello and welcome to BYC! If your rooster is behaving and your hens aren’t bald I wouldn’t sweat the ratio. Sounds like you will have more soon anyway!

Hiya, and welcome to BYC!

@BlindLemonChicken is right. Some people have 1 rooster 10 hens, and two of them are bare-backed. I've got two roosters with three hens in a breeding pen and planned to take one roo out, but saw how everyone was getting along, and weeks later, my ladies are still looking great. It just depends, and each situation can be different.

Thanks for the support. When he first realized he was a rooster I was worried about the ratio. Now the hens know how to deal with him and pleased that he is behaving.
