Hi Rob! That is a very cool 3rd grade project and I'm sure the kids will LOVE taking care of the birds. My brother teaches and hands on lessons are huge favorites at any stage of learning.

Those barred Rocks look great! Yes, that's exactly what I want for my class. Sounds like a nice general-purpose breed. The fact that they may be nice with children makes them even better. Thanks!!!
The kindergarten teacher at my kid's school incubates eggs every year. The kids love it and then she sells the chicks so it becomes a money making project (money used for field trips). This is just an idea but, if you know of anyone else in your area that has an incubator and is willing, have them incubate eggs the same time as you. That way you've got a backup if you have a total failure with the school incubator. We've done this for her and she has really appreciated it when her 'bator had problems.
Good Luck!
Such a great Idea! When I was in kindergarden our class hatched out eggs and I ended up taking 2 home to my grandparents ranch! I grew up in the SF bay area, California so eggs/chicks/chickens were a new learning expirience for me! I'm now 21 and live in the boonies and I'm on my first solo hatch, and I just LOVE chickens! I keep getting flashbacks to kindergarden when we hatched the eggs(even the smell is giving me dejavu)! (I wish I was a little older when we did that though, maybe I would remember it better!! I just remember bits and pieces!) Good luck to you and your class!! and Welcome! I'm new too and there's bucket loads of info on here! I found its easier to ask a question then it is to search through ALLLLLL the posts! Peaople are really nice and you get a LOT of great answers!
