Hi Everyone!!

Kinda new here. I have been reading on the site for a while off on on and tonight I ordered my chicks from McMurry. Anyone else used them?

I am worried about them coming in the mail. Bare with me, I'll be asking questions LOL

Here is what I ordered. My husband ordered standards, i ordered Bantams.

Here's the list...

(my daughter picked) 1 Black Japanese Bantam
(my son picked) 1 Buff Japanese Bantam

2 Black Frizzles
2 Sultan Bantams
2 while silkies

My hubby's order
4 Buff Orpington's Pullets
2 Columbian Wyandottes Pullets
4 Pearl White Leghorns Pullets
1 Phoenix Rooster
4 Red Star Pullets
2 Silver Spangled Hamburg Pullets
1 (they are going to throw in for a surprise)

anyone have any advice / suggestions or experiance with any of these breeds? Would love to hear

Mail order chickens aren't so bad. You'll do fine.

Although I like the Japs and Sultans I have no banties.

I do like your husbands selection. OK maybe not the Leghorns, but you'll never be without eggs especially with those sex-links. And the Pheonix? I love those birds. I've only had one, but it was a white pullet.

When do the babies get there? Do you have your brooder all set up?

Oh and a lot of people love their Leghorns I just never cared for the ones I had. The Orps are fun and pretty to look at.

Pretty much covers the breeds I've had from your list.

What other type of help do you need?

from another Californian! You've got some great birds there. I love our Buff Orpington. She is so calm, sweet, and lays every day. I'd get more of her if I had the room. Your kids will be great with the chicks. Best of luck!

I have buff orpingtons. They are mellow and friendly. They like to sit in my lap and get petted. They are a large bird and will need low roosts and relatively larger nest boxes than the others. A few of mine started laying at 24 weeks and we were unprepared without nest boxes, but I have a slacker who just started laying a week or so ago and she's 11 months. Chickens are like people, they are on either side of the bell curve , but most are in the middle.
