Hello!

chocolate m'scovy :

Ornamental waterfowl?

yes, the majority of all waterfowl in the world falls under this. The domestic "breeds" every one is used too is just the tip of the ice burg. There are over 100 species of migratory "ornamental" ducks a lone, not to mention all the swans and geese species. Falcated teal are just one, there are 24 species of teal alone that I can think of off hand. To me, they are some of the prettiest in the world, and so cool to me due to their tiny size. The average teal is hand sized, litterally only 5-8 inches long tops, falcateds are the largest, big wood duck sized, but are not considered a true teal. Hottentots are the smallest at about 5 inches long, kinda makes all these folks calling calls "bantam" ducks look silly. If they only knew how big calls were compared to all the wild species out there, LOL

Mr. (or Mrs.) Boggy, oh my it is such a treat to speak to you! Of course I have seen your post. Truly inspirational stuff. I know I can't never afford most ducks but we can all dream can't we?

It's Mr. but Aubrey works just fine

Yep we can all definitely dream, I still do it all the time too!

Fortunately most of the North American species arent too bad, most are available under $100 per pair as are a lot of the south american species. but yep, there are a lot of them that top $1000- $5000 per pairs still, most of those are the super rare and extremely hard to keep species though that few will ever see much less have the opportunity to raise. I'd say over half the worlds species are between $50- $150 per pair though, so with time, they may not be totally out of reach for you. Get a few of your favorites and keep them for a few years, once they start to produce, use your "bird money" to expand and get new species. That's the only way most any of use can afford it any more, let the birds pay their own way and fund our hobbys, haha

If you ever get serious about it and get down to looking for some, let me know, if I dont have all mine back by then, I will be glad to send you to some one who does have them.
If you have seen the thread, then I'm sure you know of the Federal permits required for the north american species too though for sales purposes right? If not, look into that, falcated arent native, but are for some reason on their list of migratory and protected ducks, as are about 45 other species of ducks. The rest are all free and clear for trade.

Good luck to you, hope you are able to get all the birds you want!!

Keeping waterfowl is fun and there are so many neat breeds that one can buy! My favorite are the mallards because they have shiny green heads. Some people call them greenheads but only the boys, they call the girls suzies but I don't know why.
