I just picked up my first chicks! So excited! We've been thinking about raising chickens for eggs for quite a while, but purposely waited until spring to take advantage of all the locally available chicks. I picked up 6 naked necks at my local feed store and will probably add 1 or 2 other varieties - just a few of each. The naked necks are not pretty, but their disease resistance (according to books and what I've read online??) seemed to me a good way to go for a beginner.

So my first goal is my own eggs, of course, and the by-product fertilizer for my garden as well pest control....it's a win win!!
