I've never had chickens but used to keep budgies and I miss having birds around. I don't know if I'll get chickens this year but every year around this time I am looking at chickens and plans for building a coop. I live in Connecticut so I know I'll need something that does ok in winter, and besides other predators there are quite a few cats in the neighborhood, those cute little bantams would be too tempting for them so I want a larger breed. I have been leaning towards cochins, they seem good sized and winter-hardy and I like what I've read about them.

Cochins are a good breed for cold weather, and so are RIRs and barred rocks - which are better layers. Good luck with your chickens whatever breed you decide to get, and enjoy the site!

I was looking at the Rhode Island Reds and they do sound like good layers, so do the Rocks. But I'm probably one of the few people wanting to get chickens who is only half interested in fresh eggs, I don't want chickens for meat either (I'm into fishing and eat my catch sometimes but do not think I could butcher something I raised, I get attached too easily) I'm more into keeping some pet birds that won't do too much damage to my yard and garden and maybe have a little pest control. I was also looking into getting guineas.
