I totally agree with your assessment of modern animal "husbandry," if you can even call it that. My husband and I actually went cold-turkey vegetarian (nearly vegan) about six years ago when we found out about factory farms. Thankfully we were able to find local sources of meat, poultry and eggs that practiced humane standards and are just amazing, and this is what led us to having our own chickens. Our girls are so happy and so spoiled, and we even sell eggs to a few friends and neighbors. So glad you joined us!
