Wow, what an awesome site! I have been reading so many posts and am starting to get a good idea of what I am in store for with having chickens...and looking forward to it!
I am brand new to this site and to chickens, but it seems like the next natural step in my goal to being self sustaining and in knowing what is in my food.
Purchased 6 chicks from TSC on Tuesday; 3 Brahmas- "Baggins, Brandybuck and Took (daughter named them after the Fallohide Hobbit species of Lord of the Rings, 1 red (not sure what "red")- Rosie Jane, 1 Jersey Giant- Weezer, and 1 Tetra Tint- Dottie. The guy thinks after checking the straight runs, that one of the Brahmas is male and everything else is female. These chicks all have their own personality, and I am completely fascinated by them.
Next endeavor is to build a coop in the next few weeks, as I am reading, they grow fast! Have the wood, just waiting for the weather to cooperate on a weekend.
I do have a question for those who are seasoned chicken owners, is it possible to use shredded paper for bedding if cleaned out more often than wood shavings? I ask because I have access to an abundance of it from work. Are there downsides to it. Always am one to live below my means where possible, and even though it isn't much, it does save a few pennies. I appreciate your thoughts.
Again, happy to have found this site and reading and learning from all the posts, what an incredible group of people! Wish I had something to offer to others, but hopefully that will come too. Thanks!

Hello & welcome! Glad you have found so much useful info! As for shredded paper - I do use it on occasion, but not for chicks. It really isn't terribly absorbent and doesn't give them stability under foot. I use it in with chopped straw in the 'big girls' coop, I have never used it alone - I've never had the quantity. I would think it would work well for nesting boxes. Enjoy your babies they grow like weeds!

Thanks, makes sense. Your comment is appreciated!

I have heard of people using all kinds of things for bedding in the nest boxes, so I would think shredded paper in the boxes would work well. As for coop bedding, pine shavings, grass hay and sand are great mediums.

Have you stopped by our learning center here on BYC? Lots of good reads on all the aspects of keeping poultry....
