Hello

Thank you all for the warm welcome! I do have chickens of my own 13 hens 6 months to a year old. All different breeds and some cross breeds, I have one pressing question I have posted it on the feed and water forum about bearded oats in place of their whole oats in their feed, should I feed them or not? If someone knows an answer or has experience I would love to hear

thank you all!

I would feed them whole oats. I don't know that the bearded oats would cause them any harm (I've never fed them to my chickens, nor do I know anyone else who has), but I do know that bearded oats can be harmful to horses and cattle because the " beard" can get caught in their throat, causing them to choke or have abscesses, so my thought is, why risk it with my chickens?

Did you copy what I said on the feed forum?? ;) haha we can definitely agree don't feed to cattle or horses, I had wrote "Hi I typically feed my chickens whole oats from the feed store, I give my horses a ration of them as well, anyway I found a supplier that has a great deal on bearded oats, I know that bearded oats can be harmful to horses and cattle because the " beard" can get caught in their throat and cause choke or abscesses. Is this the same for chickens or are they alright with bearded oats? Tried to google it with no help found. Hoping to find an answer here! Thanks!"

Anyways he is out of bearded oats for the year now anyways, he says his chickens do t have problems with them but I'll probably play it safe and just feed the triple cleaned horse grade whole oats I always buy. Thanks for the input!

I've read it on one of your posts (I don't remember if it was on the feed forum on not) as well as a couple of other places. I had a friend who raised horses who told me the same thing. It's one more tidbit of good information that I've learned. We're never too old to stop learning.
