Hello! My name is Mela - it means apple in Italian - and I'm a new chicken owner! I stumbled onto this site by complete accident and I'm so happy to be here! I've had my chickens for a little bit over a month now. I don't know what breed they are, but they have started laying and I think right now they are molting? I'm not too sure, and I'm rather young so I really don't have a really good income to buy all sorts of fancy things for my chickens. But I really do love them and they help me so much! Well I hope to like this website just as much as you all!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. You have come to the right place for all the fun and learning! How many feathers are you finding around the coop? Or are your chickens going bald in places? Anything you can tell us about this molting will help us determine why they are losing feathers.

Enjoy your new birds!! We all love our birds too and enjoy helping each other here. So make yourself at home. Ask any questions you may have and welcome to our flock!

Chickens don't usually molt this time of year, but it is always possible. Were they especially stresses when you got them? Definitely check out the link Michael Oshay posted. Enjoy your flock and have a great spring!

I'm finding a few feathers here and there, but one of my youngest birds - I named her Iceland - she has been losing feathers for quite a while and hasn't really been growing them back. I got them as a gift from my uncle about a month ago and I put her with one rooster that I named Denmark. He is really sweet to her, but my cousin told me that Iceland was abused by the other roosters before she was given to me. So I'm not too entirely sure why she keeps losing feathers and has a lot of white spots on her. I also had to separate her from the other two hens because they constantly picked at her and made her bleed profusely. Although she is the only hen to be laying eggs every day so far, and I'm just worried that she may be sick. Do you have any idea what might be happening?
