Hello new to this As you see in my profile name. This is the wifes hobby. she wants to raise chickens. She wants them for the grandchildren" six of them". She would like to raise chickens for eggs. We are totally new to this. we have to order chickens online some wheres as all the local places are sold out. I need to build a chicken coop. I can build a coop as I am a carpenter. Just need help on which birds to but and what size and plans for a coop. the wife would like to have 10-12 chickens.
Thanks for any help.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You might like to check out the BYC Learning Center, lots of good articles on all aspects of chicken keeping you’ll find useful with your new flock. https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

For coop ideas, check out the BYC Coops section, there are a lot of coop designs www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coop_Designs

Here are a couple of links to some nice chicken breed comparison charts you might like http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html and http://albc-usa.etapwss.com/images/uploads/docs/pickachicken.pdf when you have narrowed down your choices, don't forget to check the BYC Reviews section for member reviews on the different breeds.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Where children are concerned, I would recommend going with one of the breeds that has a well deserved reputation for being calm and gentle (potential lap pets) such as Australorps, Orpingtons, Brahmas, Cochins, Sussex, or Faverolles. If egg production is a priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list. If you don't mind hybrids, I would recommend Black Sex Links (Black Stars) which are friendly and hardy, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Rule of thumb is 4-5 sq.feet per bird inside the coop (excluding nest boxes and roosts) and 10 sq.feet per bird in the outside run. The coops section has loads of ideas and plans that cover what chickens need to do well. You might also check out the predator section to know how to keep them out. Everything loves chicken, and as soon as you get some they will be checking them out and

. For warned is for armed.

Thank you for all the welcomes. The wife is looking as to see what chickens she can get. The coop I am going to build will be off of the ground with nesting box on side. I will post pictures as we proceed.

Thanks again for welcoming us to the flock.

UPDATE : She has ordered the chicks Bard Plymouth rock, golden laced Wyandotte and columbian Wyandotte.
