Hello! I've been searching for poultry forums to join and this one seemed appealing to me!

I've had chickens a few times in the past, and hatched some eggs about two months ago. I had a 6/6 hatch, to six healthy chicks, though one of which hatched with no eyes. I separated her and her sister off from the other four, so she wouldn't be picked on, and she's thrived and is doing incredibly well! She's called Mumble, and lives with her sister Cleo in an old hamster cage I had. They'll be upgraded to a large rabbit run as soon as I get together the materials to build one :) they're both Pekins, and of the other four I have a Polish/Silkie, another Pekin, and two Appenzeller Spitzhaubens :D
 
Welcome to the Backyard chickens flock. That is so nice of you to give that poor chick a chance at life. Sometimes another chick/chicken will take over as a caregiver/service chicken and help it around. Keeping things in the same place (food, water, etc) will be of great comfort to her.

I'm so glad your taking such wonderful care of Mumble. She sounds like a happy, well cared for bird that is lucky to have you for an owner.
We thought we might have a blind chicken for a while, but we never really got an answer to it, as she turned out to have brain damage and we didn't know whether she acted the way she did because of that or because she couldn't see well.
Disabled chickens can't be bred (so the genes aren't passed on), they may not be good layers, but they are wonderful pets that can thrive under proper care.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I'm already keeping everything in the same place for her :)
They won't be being bred from at all, as I'm worried it could be genetic so I don't want it passed down obviously. I almost lost Mumble after the first few days and spent hours with her getting her to eat. I'm not sure how to attach photos onto this forum, but if you want to see pictures of her she has her very own Facebook page: Mumble the Chicken. She's quite a big public figure! Those who supported my decision to give her a chance love her, as do I of course :) I have also found a couple of useful Facebook groups dedicated to disabled hens, which have helped me greatly with Mumble's care :) she's actually cuddled in bed with me right now, we're watching Australia.
 
Thanks. Unfortunately we lost Mavis to a disease a little while ago.

She wasn't doing as well as your chick, she practically acted blind and deaf and she tended to walk in circles. Still, she was my girl.

Again, though, I'm really glad your chick is doing so well!
 
Oh I'm so sorry to hear that :( Mumble also walks around in circles, she tends to do it when she's excited, like at feeding time or afternoon cuddle time! Thank you<3
