Hello Emma and welcome - I'm in North Yorkshire. What we did before we bought any chickens was to look through books, chicken magazines and on the web to see which breeds took our fancy and would suit our purposes best. There a multitude of different breeds and every chicken is different, even within the same breed. The trick is to spend as much time with them as you can. Then they'll get to know you and, just as important, you'll get to know them and that will help you spot any problems very quickly.

Enjoy your chickens when you get them.

Theres so many different types of chickens, your head will be spinning! if you buy a book i recommend "storey's guide to raising chickens" by gail damerow. its a great book. I was also given "the joy of keep chickens" it also seems petty good and has a chart to help you select breeds. And of course you cant get anything better then byc with over 100,000 members and 70,000 something chickens! This is the best site, there are threads for your location so you can talk with people in your area. Theres buddy lists and private messages, you can send them to any member! I have a new friend close to my location with chickens about the same age, and we live in an area thats similar so we can keep up to date and share our knowledge. I hope you feel free to send anyone a message, you can message me if you like! I know nothing about your climate but would enjoy to talking to you! I have black astralorp's ( BA ) they are pretty quiet and they are friendly great layers ( mine aren't laying yet though ) and they get pretty big. My Barred Rocks are kinda quiet... lol

well have a great time and keep us posted on your choices!!

this is "wild chicken" my fav shes a ba she was 11 weeks in this shes getting beautiful shes a glossy green/blue now she follows me and eats out of my hand and likes to be held and rubbed down!

Thanks again for your welcomes and advice. Payday today so (fingers crossed) will be making a start with materials needed for the coop. Slight debate with SO over roofing materials at the minute - I would like clear corrugated plastic to act as a skylight for plenty of light, but my SO thinks it wouldn't look right.

Anyway, design is pretty much done, had a play on Google Sketchup, looks good seeing the dimensions! All I had done before was masking taped the floor space where it will live! I have, since sketchup, decided to make another separate run for the chooks, the original detachable idea I think might be best served as a permanent attachment to the coop. My SO agrees with this!

There is money in the bank, so let's get building!

And yes I'll get some pictures up of the countryside - I live 5 minutes walk from our local country park, with it's woodland, parkland, river - I love to escape down there (used to swim in the same river when we were little!). To get you some of the more mountainous Welsh landscapes - we go up Snowdon regularly and have lots of pictures about somewhere on my hard drive! It really is beautiful
