UPDATE-- video link posted.

Is gasping breathing normal? Most of my other eggs have hatched, this dude is late. He pipped sometime yesterday morning but did not break through the membrane and breathe until this morning. He's been beak out for about 15 hours and the breathing is really rough. He cheeps and rocks the egg a little but isn't making progress. Do I need to assist?

hmm you may need to assist, can you post a picture? 6 of mine have hatched so far and i have yet to see anything like this happen.

Post video to YouTube, Vimeo or such and post the link here. There's another way to do it but I can't explain. BYC does not prohibit, just does not have the software to support, I don't think.

He pipped way down from the air cell and wont be able to get out. Assist if you know how but he could have some issues.

the OP was nearly 12 hours ago; has it resolved now?

I tend to the view that hatching is the chick's first challenge in life, and if they can't make it on their own, something's not quite right and it's better to let them go naturally. Having said that, I have assisted once, and the chick did fine.

The key thing is that hatching is a time-consuming process for some, and patience is a virtue here. There are lots of posts where people intervened to help too early, and created (more or other) problems. A broody hen will hold for days.
