First of all, we have 5 Parakeets and had 4 Zebra Finches. But this past week, one died and the next day another. Here's what happened:

I was just relaxing in our living room, when I decided to look at the finches and see if any had laid eggs yet(we have 2 cages; one has a pair and the other has a pair). Well, I was shocked to find that mine(named Sweety) was hanging upside down from her nest!

Her foot had been caught in a piece of cotton in the nest, and no one had noticed.

She was still alive, but barely. I quickly got her foot untangled and took her out. She was just barely alive and I knew 3 things; if she was hanging there for a long time, 1. the blood has gone to her head, 2. she is probably dehydrated, and 3. she may be hungry. This was just common sense, since I have never had to deal with an emergency with our finches like that. So I held her in my hands, hoping that the blood would go back throughout her body. I took a bowl of water and dipped my finger in it, then held it up to her beak. She drank some of it. I thought that she must be hungry, so I tried to get her to eat some seed, but wasn't successful. She was breathing strangely and I was starting to get more worried. She made peeping noises once and a while and tried to walk a little when she started to regain consciousness. She started to act better, once she had opened her eyes and got some water. But then she started to close her eyes again, and she kept putting her head back. She pooped once, then rolled over like she was in pain and died.

It was really sad and I felt bad for her mate, Joey. We tried to put him in the cage with the other pair, but they rejected him. The next day, we found him died in his cage.

Maybe from the loss of his mate?
But anyways, I did all I could for Sweety. What else do you think I could have done? Does anyone have experience with finches? What could have killed Sweety?

Thanks!

Thanks. That's what I thought. But I don't understand why Sweety died.

She probably had been hung for a while before you found her. She probably wore herself out trying to free herself and the hanging upside down for a prolonged period added to it. Thing about finches is they have beautiful voices that are rather quiet when if it had been one of your parakeets they would have squawked until it caught your attention.

I lost one of my zebra finches outside last year and chased it for 3 hours and almost caught it but never did I put the female in with my Parakeets and they leave her be she is like the unwanted house guest.

Thanks everyone.

onthespot- yes, they are such gentle little birds. And when some of ours laid some tiny eggs once, the babies were so tiny!

They were the only ever finches that we hatched from our own finches; in fact, they were from the pair that died. But one of the babies died unexpectedly when it was a fledgling and the other died when it got out of its cage and got lost.

But anyways, I love the songs that the finches make. They aren't too loud to be annoying(like our Parakeets).

And I love the colors of the male finches; they are so pretty!

Emzyyy- I'm sorry about your finch getting outside and flying away.

Every time we put our finches together with the Parakeets, the Parakeets try t attack them.

So we just keep them in separate cages.
