I have a 3 day old chick that appeared to have pasty butt. After cleaning her vent area, It looked more like just some poo on the outside. She has a hard time laying down, breathing, and even walking. I initially thought that she might be constipated, but I really have no idea. Her belly seems to be a little bloated. What can I do for her???? She just stands there looking like she is going to poo, but can't. Please help!!!

Pasty butt is really not good, you have to stay on top of it. I haven't had this problem with my chicks because my hens hatch them out, but from what i have gathered from reading on here it's very common in chicks that have been shipped due to stress. So saying all of that, heres suggestions that I have read about, put sand in their brooder, grind up reg. oatmeal and add to their chick started, and add vACV to their drinking water. !tab. to 1 gallon of water. I hope this helps and wish you the best with your chick.

Thank you for your response. They have grit in their brooder. They have vitamins in their water. Is that what vACV is?? These chicks were not shipped. We hatched them ourselves. She is the only one with this problem.

Apple cider vinegar, don't hear about pasty butt much unless shipped, so this could be something else going on, It's just a guess when it comes to these little ones maybe even a birth defect, so just watch it close and maybe it just needs a few more days to get going.

This particular chick was severely stuck in her shell. Because of all the egg soccer going on, her shell was broken off, and she was just covered in membrane, which became like leather. We had to help her out of her membrane. She was doing good for three days. Now breaths very hard. I did see her get a drink a couple hours ago...a very small drink. Keeping an eye on her tush. Seems clear. Anything other advice from anyone is appreciated!!!!
