Have never seen this issue before. Chickenvworh poopy butt this morning acting droopy. Comb has lost it red color. Not acting herself was hiding behind feed barrel. Soaked her butt in warm epsom salts water . Rinsed with more warm water. Trimmed away some of feathers. Looked like bad case of diarrhea. She seemed to enjoy the soak. I've never seen this before. Should I be alarmed? If so what is next step. I have her outside for afternoon. Advise is appreciated. Kandees Clucks

Hi,

It could be a number of things. What do your chickens get for food?

Is her butt really stinky or did the discharge have white/yellow stuff in it? That could mean vent gleet.

Could other chickens be pecking on her?

I'd separate for a couple of days so you can eliminate any other chickens causing this. I would give her some probiotics too in case she's just got some imbalance causing diarrhea. The three easiest way to give probiotics is to get powders for their water, Greek yogurt, or ferment grain.

I have seen similar to this twice with my flock. Once was as a result of a predator attack. Something tried to eat my chicken butt first, pulled off a bunch of feathers, and her bottom was weepy for a week until she started healing up. The other time was as a result of an egg-hiccup and the egg didnt have enough calcium in the shell and it broke inside her. I gave her more calcium and warm water soaks until she got it all out and got back to normal.

I didnt see anything white/yellow stuff in poop it was normal. Stuck in her feathers. Soaked out easy. Looked like normal poop just runny.

They get rolled corn/ egg crumbles in their feeder. Clean water daily. Sometimes they get treats. She's outside now eating grass. Its possible she's being pecked but haven't seen it happening.
I have Greek yogurt that can give her. Always have it on hand as I eat it.

Thank you for your advice

How much corn to what type of egg crumbles?

Its not whole corn. They are 50 lb bags. It half each mixed well. Then I usually buy layena layers pearls for egg & digestion health 16 % protien to mix in with the rolled corn/ egg crumbles mixture. Had been mixing feather fixers in their feed but haven't added that in about 2 months. Sometimes I give them hen scratch for a treat.

Can you get a better, closer up picture? Is the vent wounded or damaged? How old is she and do you know when she last laid? I'm wondering if she may have prolapsed and then been pecked because of it.

I'd definitely reccomend to immediately Stop giving them corn, its not at all good for them, it will cause fat build up around their organs and kill them. It's also drastically reducing their nutrition, diluting whatever nutrition there is in the real feed by half.

The pecking could be caused by starvation.

Corn is a treat, like scratch.
