HELP 3 day old chicks randomly dieing!

Sorry I hadn't seen any of the responses before I wrote my post. Thank you for posting the homemade electrolyte solution! I made it and have replaced their water with it, except I can't get this weak one to drink.

I'm so sorry for your losses! Sounds like that hatchery is having some trouble. I'm wondering if it's possibly coccidosis? They seem puffed up very sleepy lethargic light colored runny poo. Not all coccidosis cases have blood in their stool...I'm wondering if Corid or Amprol (amprollium) would help? ? Do you think it's possible that they came with coccidosis? Looks like everyone has tried all the regular things such as electrolyte, pedolyte, grow gel, etc. I'm wondering if it might be possible they came Ill
With coccidosis. ?? If that's the case Corid or amprollium should help. .. The symptoms seem so similar to cocci. I can understand perhaps one shipment getting jolted and loosing some chicks but it seems too many are having issues from this hatchery. I'm wondering if it's possible or not for them to be sent sick.? They are so young I'm not sure it would even be possible for them to come with cocci. But it makes me wonder. If not cocci some other illness that came from the hatchery? There seems to be too many birds dieing from them.i would think that they did come ill with something. .or they are just very weak for some reason...

I'm really thinking this is all do to the cold. January and February are just too cold to be shipping chicks. These chicks were probably healthy, but they can't stand the stress of being shipped with the extreme temperatures. Anyone receiving chicks in the mail needs to get them on electrolytes and warm them up immediately when they arrive. Chicks from the feed stores will suffer stress too because they are shipped in the same manner. March/April are probably a better months to get shipped chicks.

Not at 3 days old. That would be extremely uncommon.

What shavings is everyone using? Just make sure it is not cedar. Do not overheat them. Offer electrolytes.

It very well could be shipping stress. Maybe some type of bacteria they picked up during hatching...

I'm not sure. Their poop seemed normal. I don't know much about cocci with chickens but I do know about it with dogs and it always showed symptoms. I just lost another so I'm down to 8 out of my 10 chickens (actually 11 since they sent a free Red Star).

They're a bit young for cocci, and they would have had to pick it up somewhere from older chicks or adults. Cocci is more an environmental thing, they get it from eating the poop of other infected birds, so it's unlikely you'll have it in chicks that were shipped out as day-olds. Other things like MG are possible, as that can be passed down from the hen to the chick through the egg.

Not from a hatchery. They would go under if they had MG> McMurray is a very respectable hatchery. It is not MG

I do not feed medicated feed, and my chicks are on deep litter that was used by my adults. This helps them build immunity straight away. Ever notice how broody raised chicks NEVER get cocci? It's because they pick through her poop right away, helping their bodies build up strong cocci immunities.

That's very interesting to hear. Thank you. I was not feeding medicated feed but I am now mixing medicated feed in with it. I told the feed store I wanted pine shavings and the bag just says wood shavings. I know it's definitely not cedar.

Haha, no, they would go under if they TESTED for MG. But they don't, because it is so prevalent.
If they had MG, people would complain and spread the news. No one would buy from them. They would go bankrupt and close.

They are extremely careful in hatcheries. They are almost always the safest place for infection free chickens.
