hello everyone

sorry i have been so very busy lately and havent had a chance to come online much BUT i am having major issues right now and could use some advice. i had a flock of 4 chicks that were 5 weeks old. all of a sudden they started pooping pure blood from the vent. 2 of them have died within a few hours time. the other 2 lasted over night and i have been giving them bactrim. i was told the bactrim would help. the poor chickens are so sick :( am i doing this right? is the bactrim going to help? also, i have a flock of 6 chickens that are a little over 11 weeks old. they do not seem to be sick. i did a quick poop check this morning and i have yet to find bloody poo. the 11 week olds have full run of the back yard and i leave their coop/run open for them to come and go as they please. at night they get locked up. my back yard is not large so its not like they go a long distance. i live in a residential area. the baby chicks that are 5 weeks old have just been giving their own coop/run. my big chickens have no access to them since the little ones are too young (in my opinion) to get roaming time. they have been outside in their coop/run for 3 days now and stay in there. my big chickens will watch them from the outside of the wiring but have no access to them. please tell me if my big babies are at risk? if so what should i do? should i medicate them even if they do not show signs? i am so confused. i already lost 2 and only have 2 left. god forbid anything happen to my big chickens i will just die. i love my flock so much and they love me. they listen to me and follow me around like good little chickens. why is this happening? all my chickens are still on medicated chick feed. i have not fed them any other feed! why the cocci?! please help me. i want to save these 2 sick chicks and i dont want my biggens to get sick either?

I went through the coccidea mess last spring. You can treat with albon if they are already showing symptoms. Yes, the other ones can catch it, it is spread in the feces in your yard and is very contagious. Treat their drinking water with corid 9.6% amprolium at 4 cc's per gallon of water for 5 days ( all your babies). The adult birds likely have immunity to the strain of cocci in your yard, unless it was introduced by the babies. In any case, I might would treat all my birds just to be sure.
Albon can be had from a veterinarian if you explain what is going on. They can check a stool sample from your birds if necessary to give you a prescription. Dose is 500mg/1L of water...

thank you shelly

i am having problems finding corrid/amprolium in my area. do you know of a trusted brand or trusted site i can purchase this from?

No to antibiotics! YES to CORID. Cocci is not caused by bacteria, but by a protozoan.

Bactrim is an antibiotic, not for cocci.

Get liquid Corid 9.6% solution and dose them with that for 5-7 days, 2 teaspoons to a gallon of water, changed daily.
2 teaspoons is 9-10 cc/ml, not 4 cc, which is not enough if they are in really bad condition and dying.

www.revivalanimalhealth.com has Corid. You can even buy it on Amazon.com.

Dose all chicks in the same brooder/coop at the same time. As they get older, they become immune to the oocycsts in the soil that cause the cocci, better able to handle them.

Yes, they are all for cattle. There is nothing for chickens. All are off label uses.

This is the one, the 16 oz bottle of liquid at Revival.

quick question speckledhen...

once i treat my flock would i have to re-treat them in the future if this horrible tragedy were to occur again? or is it once they have been treated once they will become immune to it?
i love my flock and will do anything to protect them. the babies that came down with cocci are technically not mine. i was helping a friend raise them and once i felt they were old enough and able enough to be outdoors i was going to give them back. in fact the babies were one week away from being returned to their owners when this happened. eventually i plan on hand raising a few other chicks. sometime in the future, just not sure when....
im so confused. i raised mine from just a few days old to now and have not had any issues. why would my flock be purfectly fine yet these small babies developed this under my watch and let me tell you, i did everything i thought i was supposed to do right. it just boggles my mind.
basically is this a one time thing treating my flock even though they might not even have cocci?

i purchased exactly what you told me to buy! thank you

Sorry Speckled Hen, I was posting the dosage given by my avian veterinarian. I would never tell someone to dose higher than what the doctor told me...
