ONLY A MONTH??!!

A friend and I trapped muskrat when we were teenagers. He caught one in one of his traps. It still smelled of skunk 4 years later. Probably still does 35+ years later.

Muskrat aren't that bad. My father used to trap around 300-400 a season and skin them in a friend's basement sitting around a wood stove. The smell was bad, but nothing like bringing a skunk into the basement. That skunk hosed down everything in the area, but the smell does wane after a while.

Want to get rid of it? Spray your lawn and kill all of the grubs that are just under the surface. No food no Skunk, also leave no spilled feed lay or keep pet food out over night.

You may notice little torn up patches in the lawn from the Skunk hunting grubs and they will also tear apart rotting wood looking for grubs too.

They have no reason to fear you due to their defences and will often come very close to you but hey, they know you. Your scent is everywhere on your place and they are used to it.

Just build your coop and run like Fort Knox and sleep well at night.

My point was it takes a well placed heart/lung shot. If you disturb the central nervous system by hitting the head or spinal area, they tend to spray. I've never used a shotgun, but would expect the same effect as a head shot.

I have hired a "Critter Getter" and he came over and has set three traps so we will see what has happens. He says they will not spray in the traps. They are wrapped in some sort of black plastic. I will hold my breath and see what happens...........He also informed me skunks are one of the main carriers of rabies.
I will keep you all informed on what happens!

I hate to disagree with you on this...but I've had 20 years of shooting skunks under my belt (one 5 months ago ) and in my experience if you don't shoot them in the head , they spray . A 22 round in the head works nicely . I'm not sure why you would take a heart or lung shot......you take the chance of missing and severly wounding it so it will spray and be in pain if you don't get another shot . Just my experience .
