Electric fence is great for preventing them from climbing or digging into their area. If you are not able to put it permeant you can use A temporary fence around the outside like the horse people use. Electric fence is easy to attach to your existing fence anyway with fasteners for wood or wire. Not too expensive but efficient. Raccoons are relentless as I lost two to them before the electric fence. So sorry for your loss. Hard to lose a friend.
