Hi all I'm new to BYC and raising chickens and unfortunately my fist post is about a prolapsed vent in one of my hens. I currently have two bantam Old English (i think?) and one bantam silver sebright cockerel all about 8 months old.

This morning I noticed a lot of white poop on one of my hens (Greta the one in the foreground of the above photo) and when I picked her up to check it out I noticed, for lack of better wording, her butt was hanging out. So I did some googling and now believe her vent is prolapsed.

This is what I've done for her so far:
9:30 AM Found the prolapsed vent
Brought her in for quarantine
Washed butt and surrounding feathers with warm water
Gently pushed the vent back in
Went to CVS for Preparation H (Hemorrhoid cream)
10:45 AM Got back from CVS to find Vent Prolapsed again
Washed butt and surrounding area with warm water
Gently pushed vent back in
Applied cream
11:40 AM Vent Prolapsed again
Washed butt and surrounding area with warm water
Gently pushed vent back in
Applied cream
12:30 PM Vent Prolapsed again
Washed butt and surrounding area with warm water and used epsom salt this time
Gently pushed vent back in
Applied Witch Hazel instead of prep H

These are some photos before and after the epsom salt and Witch hazel from 12:30

On the last attempt at putting it back in I held it there for a 20-30 seconds and applied gentle pressure with a warm cloth for a couple minutes after it was in. Its been about 20 minutes since the last treatment and redness and swelling is slightly down and the vent is staying in place for now.

There is not an egg stuck in there as far as I could tell. But the last egg I collected from her had small amount of what looked to be blood but I dismissed it as poop since there was only a small smear and was redish/brown in color.

I don't know what to do besides keep soaking and pushing it back in so pease throw any advice/suggestions my way!
Thank you!!

Welcome To BYC!

How is your hen doing?
It looks like you are doing all the right things.

Thank you so much!

I think she's doing good. Were on day three of her prolapsing every hour or two. It looks as if it happens whenever she poops. She got to get out yesterday and bask in the sun for a bit which she was loving. Theres also quite a bit of discharge and white poo? coming out and sticking to her bum. I just wipe the whole area down every time I push the vent back in.

Sometimes it may take a while for the swelling to go down.
You can try an anti-inflammatory cream.
Soaking once a day in a warm epsom salts bath may also help, IF she's not lethargic.
I would also give her some extra calcium for a couple of days - you can use 1 Tums daily or 1/2 Caltrate (daily).
