Hi! I'm 16 and new at..all of this.
I'm trying to build a small home for 3 chickens using an old kennel (fairly large, I can fit myself and my sister inside) made of wood and metal for the roof. I'm not sure where to put nesting boxes..if I should raise the kennel off the ground or add more ventilation holes. Of course I'm not building it myself! My mother is willing to help with the wood work but I have to make the plans..

I would be so thankful if anyone had ideas?

I'm putting it inside a half sheltered area with a run for the chickens made by the previous owners of our new home! Now all I need are nesting boxes and a place to keep warm as it's very, very, very.. Cold in Melbourne right now.

Thank you~

I'm not much of a builder but, yes, you will need adequate ventilation and a door that can be closed in bad weather. Raising it off the ground somewhat will allow air to circulate underneath & expose critters trying to burrow into it. One nest box should suffice - hens generally use the same one. Is the house tall enough to put a roost up inside?

Head for the coops section they may have some dog house remodels for viewing. BTW Welcome to Backyard chickens, glad you joined the flock.

A plastic crate can work as a nest box. If the top is hinged, you can gather eggs through that access. S five gallon bucket can also work.

It appears to be wood, so a roost should be easy to add.

The door can be made smaller. I would suggest blocking a portion of the bottom part of it as well so whatever you use as being doesn't get pushed out as easily. Also a door you can close at night. And of course ventilation holes.

Looks like a great start to a nice coop. Welcome to chickens!

PS  I just put  "Dog house coops," in the search box and  got good advice.  Have a look,  one suggested a hinged top for easy cleaning (why didn't I think of that?) etc.

Oh my, I didn't know there was a section for it.. Thank you so much! It's really tall but my photos don't show it very well (I was standing on a concrete slab). I'm 184cm and its up to my chest! I haven't done exact measurements yet :)

Thank you for replying!! And for the help! I will head to the coop area right now :))
