Help asap! Sick hen with possible aspiration

You can try injectable.tylan 50. ive found this hard.to come by lately on web but if your vet will see.chickens maybe you can get a script. Its.worth a shot no pun intended. I use it for.respitory infections.

Thank you. I spent 4 days nursing her and grew really attached, as if I'm not already attached to them :love. I've learned so much though through all of this. I hope it helps me in the future and all others who read this!

Aspiration needs almost 24hrs as observation if the bird passes the 24hrs stay alive there's nothing to worry except pneumonia which you can treat with Anti-Radical med such as Doxycycline , Baytril

Rarely bird stay alive if the liquid reach in alot amount
Lil bit amount of aspiration didn't kill bird but left them devlope pneumonia

thank you good to know I have tried massaging the lump and trying to get all of the liquid out from it’s beak and I got most of it out and my chicken is feeling better
Sorry forgot to say that these are my chicks names
Thank you and today she is doing great she is leaning down without throwing up and she dose not have a big lump on her breast any more she is eating drinking and taking dirt baths with other friends!!
If she dose not eat she can starve to death or have a seizure because I had a chicken get sick before and she did not eat or drink a week later in the morning she had a seizure and died.so if I were you I’d fours food down it’s throat before it dies.
@Kk the chicken lover you are on someone else's thread. Did you need help with your hen? If you need help, it would be best to start your own thread so you can get suggestions geared toward your situation. In your thread, include details (symptoms) photos and any other information that you feel that is important.

Hey everyone. I'm not sure if anyone is still watching this thread, but I have another sick chicken. Similar symptoms as before: she started off with a dirty butt, lethargic, laying down and not moving around, not wanting to eat or drink. She also prefers to lay slightly on her side and is keeping her eyes closed alot. The other hen did this as well.

I started treatment for coccidiosis yesterday even though the vet said the other chicken didn't have it. I'm not sure he knows what he is looking for.

We introduced a new flock of 7 hens and a rooster to our existing flock of 7 rhode island reds 3 or 4 weeks ago. I'm wondering if they brought something with them. Their previous owner has never had problems with illnesses before, so I'm stumped.

I wasn't able to send my other hen for a necropsy because she wasn't kept refridgerared the night she died. Rookie's mistake I guess, but I now I know! And I believe her sour crop had manifested from whatever underlying illness she had. I've been doing so much research, and I'm panicking thinking maybe marek's. I've read so many stories on how the disease presents itself in many different ways.

One more note: my currently sick chicken doesn't have loose stool. She had some a few days ago, but now is green and i believe i saw some blood in one spot today. Any insight????

BigMama I was going over this thread and just saw this last post. I wonder how you're doing today, May 30. It's been a week so just thought I'd check in and see what's the latest.
One thing, you mentioned panicking over a possible Marek's diagnosis. Two, possibly 3 of my 28 birds has Marek's symptoms and I did cull them a few days later, after exhaustive research and fact checking.:hit I was going to ask you if this might possibly be Marek's as the symptoms vary from bird to bird. One of mine had an irregular pupil and was off her food, also her crop was quite pale--all unusual for her. Another had diarrhea and wasn't acting right and her entire body looked suddenly weak. But what I've learned is this isn't a death sentence for my entire family of birds. It's more of a challenge to keep their immune systems functioning well and to watch for any signs of stress. According the articles on this site, there's not much point in going through some extreme eradication/culling exercise because the disease is always present in the soil and it is constantly mutating, just like colds and flu viruses do.

I think it's great that you're being so proactive and doing your research, as many on here do. Don't beat yourself up and don't give in to discouragement (hard, I know). I love every day I get to be around my girls and I plan to enjoy them for as long as possible. Even if it all fails, I'll have my memories. But I don't plan to give up unless it's something really drastic like, oh say flesh eating feather cancer or something.

Blessings upon you.~m

MomJones that's wonderful you're so optimistic through it all!! I'm trying to be but it's so hard. I've never had a sick chicken before I got the new flock a month ago and since then I've had 4 sick.

I somehow managed to keep the second sick chicken alive. I don't know what did it though. I've been doing Corid and did a 5 day round of Tylan, and I have also drained fluid off her belly twice. Also been doing a wet feed mix and adding probiotics and vitamins and hand feeding her. She is much more active now, dust bathing and eating more but still keeps her tail hanging low and has a very pale comb.

I've had two other sick chickens since her. One I think was injured by the rooster and the other had same symptoms so I had her euthanized and sent off for necropsy yesterday. It's so depressing, but I'm hoping it will help save the rest of my girls. I plan on posting the results when I get them in hopes that it might help someone else who may read this. Thank you for checking in on us!

Well, I lost another chicken today. This time it was one of the new black chickens. I noticed this week that one of the black chickens was having the same symptoms as my Rhode Island Reds when they became sick, and I made an appointment to have her euthanized on Thursday and sent in for a necropsy. I did not separate her because I thought for sure I could tell her apart, but when I went to get her for the vet appointment they were all acting the same and I could not tell which one was sick. Apparently I had the wrong chicken euthanized because when I went outside today I found the one that actually was sick dead by the chicken coop :hit:hit
I'm putting her on ice and sending her tomorrow for a necropsy. This is killing me. I don't know what I'm doing wrong because both flocks were fine before I combined them. I hope I get some answers soon and I will share as soon as I get them in hopes that it might help my fellow chicken keepers:fl

Hi, it's possible that you might be dealing with an enteritis intestinal infection....sounds very similar to what two of my pullets had one of them (the first one) didint make she died just as I was getting baytril from my vet but the other girl made a full recovery with a 7 day course of baytril. I caint even believe what that vet did to you're poor hen....just WOW really make my blood boil just how uncaring and incompatant he is!!!!! You whould think he whould take the time to prepare himself on how to administer antibiotics to. A bird! That is just unacceptable! I soo sorry you had to deal with such a teribble person, they shouldn't even be a vet! I can help you on how to give the antibiotics if you need me to do that?

I’m
So sorry you are going through this. I had a similar situation when I introduced some pullets to my existing flock last year. They brought in infectious bronchitis. I insisted on having more testing done and they had brought in Mycoplasma too. I unfortunately did not quarantine properly but then I also realized that even if I had, they would have recovered from the IB but still harbored the myco and whenever I combined them they would have silently infected the girls anyway. I culled my flock with a heavy heart. I hope you find a happier ending.
