So last night around 8 our first pip occurred. We are day 20/21 put in the incubator 2/6 in the am gmt. Fast forward 7 out of 16 have pipped and 2 hatched. There was no progression for chick number one: I helped a little but caught it :-( it bled a little so I have popped it back in with photo attached.
I need help with what to do next - do I leave her or do I carry on helping her?

I would leave her until the veins recede. If she doesn’t progress on her own, then continue to assist. If there’s blood, STOP. Put her back and wait a little longer. As long as she is able to breath, there shouldn’t be any rush getting her out of the shell. With the incubator opening up during lockdown, make sure she doesn’t get shrink wrapped, you can use a little water or coconut oil to moisten the membrane. Good luck! I just had to assist a chick this morning. It can be so nerve wracking, put PATIENCE is key.

Keep the incubator humidifier and just give it a spot to breath becase if you try to get it out right away it will bleed out so make sure it can breath then leave it alne so the blood vessils can dry up

Thanks; the incubator is still at 77% and seems to hold humidity well that’s the first time I opened it and did it for very little time. I wetted the membrane slightly before I put her back in. How long do you leave before you assist again? We now have 3 chicks :)

Well it usually can take up to 24 hours for a chick to hatch so I would check on it periodickly and make sure it's breathing if it seems like it hasnt made any progress after a few hours I would assist a little bit and if it bleeds to mutch stop and put it back in the incubator

I would wait a few hours, check, slowly take a little shell off but leave the internal membrane. Take tiny pieces of the shell off in the same way they would zip the egg. Only around the aircell. Do a little, put her back, a little more, etc. NEVER pull her out of the bottom of the shell, In case she is still connected. Once the yolk and all the veins on the membrane are gone she’s reddy. Just keep the membrane moist so that you can tell if there are still veins. If you notice the membrane getting dark brown or brittle, she is probably getting shrink wrapped. Just gently use water and a q-tip to moisten and wipe the membrane away from her feathers. When the membrane dries on them it is so sticky it could rip the chicks skin if you pull so make sure to moisten and remove it slowly. Keep us updated!!!
