So we had a visitor this morning at about 10am. He was not at all afraid of us and hung around for quite awhile and then wandered away. My question is should I be worried that he was wandering around by himself around 10am and apparently not fearful? I will be setting a trap but is this something I should be contacting animal control about as well?

I wouldn't worry about calling anyone, you ever heard of the 3 s's, shoot shovel shut up.It looks pretty healthy not mangey probably just a young one.

He looks to be at the age where they start wandering and looking for their own food. I would be worried about your flock if anything.
The younger ones are not as fearful about going wherever and finding food.
I agree. Shoot. Shovel. Shut up.

I set the trap yesterday afternoon and there was nothing this morning. I will be taking the shoot. shovel. shut up route. I was just wondering if there might be a momma fox around as well or if he was at the age to be wandering around on his own, especially at that time of day. I thought they were nocturnal...
The chickens are locked up until I get home unfortunately...

Foxes are not nocturnal, especially if they know where their food source is.
The first fox I got was at 11 am. And the next was 3 in the after noon.

They are too smart for a havaheart trap, so if you do manage to catch one in there, let me know how you did it haha.

Learn something new everyday haha. So is the best method just to sit outside with a gun and wait for it? This is the first time in 2 years of having chickens that I've had to deal with a predator like this.

Good fertilizer for a new tree.

What grows well in new york? Maybe an apple tree?

It is the circle of life. The fox would kill while it is alive, in death it can bring forth food.

I have a satsuma tree planted on top of one of my hens.

Yes pretty much, if it finds your chickens and gets one, generally they come back around the same time. All the ones I have got seem to come on a schedule. The one I got last year came between 4 and 6 usually. So I would sit and watch from 3:30 (just in case it came early) until I put my birds inside. I have a gun sitting by all my doors in case I see it, any where around my house. Or you could try to call it in, we have a foxpro predator call, which are pretty pricey, buy I am sure you can find some kind of call in your price range. The sound they make is pretty horrifying. I've had succes with the injured cottontail one... there is also a distressed chicken sound and many more... if you have close neighbors I'd let them know if you decide to take that route, that way they know what the terrible noise they hear is.

We don't really see foxes in the daytime in the UK
Its mainly night when they go looking for food
Luckily I live in the country and foxes can still find food
The wheelie bins have caused chaos in towns the poor foxes are starving and have been
Going into houses and attacking Babies

I think shooting foxes is legal here but I'm a real fox lover and would never kill one
I just hope they never get my chickens or I might change my opinion!
